Does this sound familiar? I’ve taken the plunge and ordered a new, much faster and more secure server from UK2.net and started moving sites over. It should mean faster response times for websites (especially WordPress) and smoother running in general.
That’s not to say things have gone smoothly so far. I allowed BootBlock onto the new box and it promptly went a bit mad – intermittently refusing default documents, email and all kinds of nonsense. UK2 kindly wiped the box and started again at my request, and all went well the second time around.
There may be a brief period of unavailability across various websites, but I have a whole month with both servers, so I can take the time to get things right.

Forgive me if there is a lull in updates and general getting-things-done’ness – the new server is finally up and running (thanks for taking your time over that, guys!) and I’m in the process of moving all of my company’s domains onto the new machine. This will probably take a while but at least I have the experience fresh in my memory from the last time I did it.
The List of Kings needs to be moved over before people start moaning at me as well – a mailing list where anything and everything is dicussed, and much shouting can be heard across the land. Currently we are discussing the merits of the Nintendo Wii, but isn’t everyone?
Right, better get on.
Edit:
And why do I keep getting ads for World of Warcraft Gold when Google hasn’t cached the front page? Tres bizarre!

I finally got round to ordering a new dedicated web server from UK2.net – it’ll be one of those 2.4Ghz Celeron jobbies with 512MB RAM and an 80GB drive, but the main drawing point is the 1000GB per month bandwidth allowance. With that, I can… well.. whatever! This server will allow me to get off my employer’s server and onto my own – it’s my company that’s bought it.
I have two customers who have pledged £100 each towards it for hosting their bandwidth-intensive sites for a year, so they’ll be the first customers to go on. Assuming they can make money off their sites there’s no reason why they shouldn’t come back time and time again.
The server has been allocated and they’re currently in the process of setting it up. Hopefully I should be able to start moving domains over to it by lunchtime.

Aftger a week of intensive headscratching, moans of frustration and outright cursing at our new overlords hosting company, I’ve managed to get maybe 2/3rds of our websites over onto the new server including this one. It’s been… interesting.
The new server is actually shared, thus it’s only a virtual one, but it does mean that we get all the features of the old one up to and including root access on our own virtual machine. There have been a few hiccups during the move (our server number is 001-01 so we feel like a bit of a guinea pig) but the tech guys have been pretty good about sorting things out.
The machine specs are slightly better on all fronts except for the amount of disc space which is roughly halved. Since we used about 6% of our previous machine, howevere, this isn’t really cause for concern.
I’ve got until the end of the month to move the rest of the websites over, so plenty to do.

Eeep! Had a call from the colo company this morning about moving servers. Seems we’re going to have to move to a new machine because the IP address we’re currently on is being.. uh.. I dunno, lost? Given away? Cancelled? Something like that anyway.
So we’re moving from a 1Ghz RaQ550 to a new Dell P4 thing that we have to share. We get a 20GB harddrive and at least 400MB RAM (Which is more than our current 256, anyway) but the CPU.. well that’s the kicker. I’m not sure how that’ll work.
It will however, feature the open source ‘Blue Quartz’ config panel so we’ll be able to move stuff over pretty quickly. I may just spend the day working from home when the time comes in order to make sure everyone’s site is all set up. I think it’ll have to be a weekend job as well, since I’ll have every single customer breathing down my neck otherwise.
If this site disappears at any time before the end of March… well you know why
