Please put brain in gear before opening mouth

With the recent bad weather in the UK, M somehow latched onto the idea that if it rained enough, the whole of the UK could disappear underwater. Naturally she was laughed at good and proper for this, and the matter was hastily forgotten until this morning.

For whatever reason, she chimed in with "Hey we used to be joined to France about 50 years ago because some people found a car park where the English Channel was. And shops and everything."

My argument that 'there was a war on 60-odd years ago and we went over in boats, remember?' was ignored. It transpires that her friend had seen something on TV, and one can only assume that she'd only been half watching it, half-understood it and made a half-arsed job of explaining it to M who was only half listening. By my reckoning, that leaves about 1/16th accuracy.

Never mind that enquiring minds have deduced that the UK separated from Fance 400,000 years ago as a result of a flood - it was 50 years ago because M's friend saw it on the telly.
