Wooo - everything's happening at once!
Boobay found more information relating to NTLs supposed Speed Increase - seems they could be just around the corner after all. You can sit and wait for the free speed upgrage (no fee required) or you can try the following:

Personally I'll sit and wait and let NTL do the upgrades, since I don't want to cock anything up full mightily after all the hassles we've had at work.
Work! Yes! Turns out we can only have one of the lines active at the moment because we don't have any of these weird little adaptor thingies that the BT bloke left us. They're a male BT phone connector on one end and a female RJ45 on the other, and I've never ever seen them before now.
So anyway, we decided the fax machine could bloody well wait and I hooked the router up instead. After some fannying about (PPPoA or PPPoE?) it kicked in and - joy of joys! - we're online at long last. First thing I did was fire up MSN Messenger and chat to t' missus.
I've also set the home router up to accept remote admin connections from the work IP which is static, so I can configure it as required but only from here and only during office hours. I'll probably do the same with the one here since my IP, although leased, hasn't changed for ages. I should probably look into VPNs so that I can access the remote drives more easily, but I might wait until we get the NAS online here before I mess about with that.
Numa Numa... ?
