Back to the Grind.

I received the HD adapter this morning and hooked up the laptop HD as mentioned previously. Got to say I wasn't really impressed with the overall quality of the thing but what the hey - any port in a storm, right?
Switched everything on, machine booted without apparent problems and found the new drive. CHKDSK fired up during the boot process and claimed to have fixed a few things, but then went onto the 'grindy grind' routine straight afterwards. A reboot didn't appear to get rid of CHKDSK but at least I can get into Windows now, and after it 'found' the new device and I rebooted - GLORY BE - I can actually see the files!
I still get CHKDSK running every time I boot up, bit this is getting somewhere now.
Sorted!

After a couple of hours of scanning, the HD went back into the laptop and booted without problems. It's still notoriously slow, but I'm going to try a defrag next weekend which might help prevent that a little. I haven't defragged this drive since the last reformat. Um.
Tonight, though, I'm going to do a backup of everything important. My last backup is two weeks old because I was away for the first week and was planning to do a backup on Friday night - if this hassle hadn't kicked off when it did, I would have done a backup a few hours later.
I cannot stress the importance of regular backups on a machine that it used for work.
