Just spoken to someone about a premium rate call that her computer had made. Seems BT rang this lady up and told her that there had been a single call to 0906 2690492, and that it had cost her £52. Eep! Hunting through her machine she found a new entry in the Dialup Networking with loads of weird characters in the name. She's deleted it and blocked all premium-rate calls on her dialup line, so hopefully it's a one-off.

£52 for one phone call though! It's actually illegal to place a call that costs more than £1 per minute and more than £20 total without prior permission, but if the dialler was installed with one of those annoying requesters ("Do you want to Download and Install the Super Happy Fun MP3 Locator?") and someone clicked 'OK', what are you gonna do? Bastards.

I'm in the market for a new mobile phone number, and I can't help noticing a new eBay scam on the go - 070 numbers! If you search for 'Gold Number' or 'Mobile Sim Number' and the like you'll occasionally see one starting with 070 - these are premium-rate number that can be mapped to mobile phones, they're not mobile phone numbers.

Buy one of these and not only does the seller make a mint on it, but they also receive money every time someone calls you on your wonderful number. To add insult to injury, your wonderful 070 doesn't even come up on other people's phones when you call them - it's usually some crappy number nobody would want in a million years.

And don't forget, whoever calls you will pay through the nose. Lovely!
