Looking at Lindows
02:47.47 - Thursday 24th July 2003 (Link to This Entry)
Just having a play about with the Lindows OS at the moment, running the demo from CD to get a feel for it. Have to say, it's pretty impressive so far.
Hardware detection was done on the fly and so the somewhat chuggy boot up from CD is further slowed as Lindows tried to make sense of the various components in your machine. That said it did a fair job of detecting most of my Inspiron 8200 - Graphics were ok in 1024x768 but I could only get my full 1400x1050 by restarting, sound was OK, built-in NIC was found OK but not the wireless PCMCIA, touchpad works, keyboard works, what else is there?
The Internet connection was all configured for me, all I had to do was boot up with a network cable plugged in and I was connected to the net straight away. I have no idea what IP it's given me though, and how would I find out? I can barely find myself round Telnet let alone a completely new GUI. I eventually found how to speed the mouse up, however.
The OS itself has done an awful lot just to get this far. Bear in mind I haven't really done any configuration at all other than mouse and keyboard settings, and the thing is up and running in under five minutes - that's pretty impressive. It would be nicer if I could save settings for another day but, well, I'm not about to junk Windows2000 just yet.
Christ, is that the time?!?!?
