eBay decides I was right after all...

Had a phone call from eBay this afternoon confirming that my phone number was, indeed, correct. An apology was given and my account is back online already. Perhaps the sarcasm in my last email finally got through to someone!

Playing about with a LAN Scanner yesterday I found that it could be used to scan any IP Range you cared to enter. As an experiment I scanned my local IP block and found - perhaps not suprisingly - that there were many machines left completely open to the intarweb. I found a few local people based on my IP address and was able to browse around the contents of their harddrives with no password challenges whatsoever.
Interestingly, it appears that all of the machines I found that were not secure were owned by women, which seems to suggest that women are not as clued up on security as their male counterparts. That's not to say that there were no gaffs by the male-owned (named?) machines I found - at least one was left wide open showing a hee-uge collection of MP3 Albums.
On the off-chance that I have another scanning session later, I've created a small text file to leave in an obvious place (ie: The Desktop) urging the machine's owner to get firewalled.
