Problems wit' teh Scumputer

Seems things were not going as well as I had hoped with the Scumputer. After whizzing through the 98SE install I thought I was gonna be in for an easy ride, but WindowsUpdate, or more specifically Internet Explorer, was crashing all the time, roughly at the same point. Start install -> Click 'Accept' -> >boink< dead. Crashed.

On a hunch I knocked the mobo down to 66Mhz bus speed while keeping the chip at 300. That seemed to cure the problem, and so now I'm left wondering it the PC100 RAM I have installed is, in fact, PC100. It says so on the sticker but, well... you know. In the end I stuck the CPU on 83x4 (333Mhz) and it seemed to run without a hitch all night. I spent an hour reading B3ta and SA without problems, and much mirth was had thereon.

I had considered keeping the Scumputer as an emergency machine but, well, it's shit. And I'd rather have the money.

Must.. Fight.. Boredom..

Feed Me!I've got to do something about this boredome I am experiencing. I'm currently waiting for someone to turn up to discuss this double glazing website I'm on and I can't help idly flicking around the ... uh... more wibbly side of the web. Hence the pic on the right. I got bored, OK?

Edit: I just tidied it up a little bit because the first version was... well... pretty crap really. This one isn't that much better, but at least it doesn't look like I've cut some eyes and lips out of a magazine. Gnngh.

Miserable Weather

Garn - after enjoying a lovely warm Spring day at the start of the week, the heavens have opened. If there's one thing I hate about te weather, it's the fact that it's so damned unprediddly-ictable. Currently it's drizzling, it has been doing for two whole hours, and it's showing no sign of stopping. This is so depressing...

Further Adventures in Scum

Tonight sees me farting about with computer innards in order to make the Scumputer into something usable. I'm now in the process of reformatting the desktop machine, having nicked it's 3Gb C: drive for use in the crap-o-tron. I'll repartition the 10Gb in there (we only used approx 5Gb anyway, so...) and reinstall all the software tonight. If I'm lucky I might be able to make a start on the 3Gb in the new machine tonight as well.

FINALLY!

The desktop machine appears to be finished at long last. There were a couple of fun points with WindowsUpdate and OfficeUpdate deciding they were not going to work, and then the scanner wouldn't fire up at all, but that turned out to be because [a] it wasn't plugged in properly, and [b] the driver install is a crock of shit.

Still, the wee beastie is back in it's previous condition. I might even give it a quick defrag and Virus scan before I go to bed, but given the time... I probably won't. Might get up early tomorrow to continue the fun with the Scumputer - got to scrub the 3Gb that's in there so as not to give away vital company secrets. Something like that, anyway.
